Henniker, known as the only Henniker on earth, is a picturesque town built along the Contoocook River. The Henniker area is known for white water kayaking and Pats Peak Ski Area as well as being home to New England College. Historic treasures in town are the double arched stone bridge, honoring the poet Edna Dean Proctor and the trussed covered bridge, built in 1972 owned by the College.
The Davison Farm, for the most part, has been conserved with the Society for the Protection of NH Forests. As conserved land, the owner is still free to perform agricultural, forestry and horticultural activities with the land. Locally, many of the large parcels of land have been conserved to preserve the character of the neighborhood. This farmstead includes over 278 acres in both Henniker and on the edge of the small town of Deering.
The 1790s center chimney colonial is situated along the winding road accented by grand mature maples. The three bedroom one bath home has retained many of its period details. Beautiful woodwork and moldings appoint the interior of the home. Typical of the time, there are two front rooms to each side of the front door, while the expansive living room to the rear contains the large keeping room fireplace. Upstairs there is a large open hall that is open to the three bedrooms. Though, in this house, as in many, the country kitchen is where we live. The kitchen was added in the ell, off the main home. The hardwood floors, wide pine wainscoting and wood fired cookstove -- still used everyday. A large farmhouse soapstone sink is placed, just below a set of windows overlooking the barnyard. The walk-in food pantry has plenty of extra shelving and a specifically lowered counter top for kneading your bread.
This ell also contains the full bath and soapstone wash sink at the side entry of the house. Beyond this is the wood shed and extra storage.
The Barns:
There are three main barns.
One, the Angus barn, is about 30X30 pole barn.
The main barn is on the NH Historic Registry. It is one of 3 in town. This barn is approx. 40X60 and was used for the young heifers.
The third is a pole barn across the road
It is approx. 24X24 and used for equipment storage
The farm includes an operating sap house, boiler and supplies for a fully operational maple sugaring business. |
